Has This Ever Happened to You?
Do you avoid speeches and positions where you are the center of attention? Have you ever found yourself having to give a presentation, or participate in a meeting, and have to speak? Were you nervous when you took the spotlight? If you have, you may think everyone has a little apprehension and anxiety before a pressure situation like this. Well, you’re partly correct. Most people do feel a bit nervous in these situations. But if your heart is beating out of your chest, sweat starts to bead on your forehead, and your breathing rate was as if you just ran a 400m hurdles, then you probably are showing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. If left untreated anxiety can worsen over time, and become harder and harder to overcome. You do not want to set yourself in a pattern of becoming nervous and apprehensive, because that just makes it happen even more. You will expect it, and of course then it will happen.
The term anxiety is most commonly used to describe an unpleasant emotional state. Anxiety can be passed down as a personality trait or can be acquired by learned behavior.
