Learning how to make small talk is vital when trying to become better at communicating with people. Small talk can be needed when trying to get to know someone, killing time, getting a date, or to make yourself or another person be comfortable. Remember the most important thing when learning how to make small talk is to keep practicing. If you aren’t very good at socializing with people you just need to keep working at it. Most people don’t learn how to talk to people overnight. Here are a couple of tips to help you with small talk.
The first thing I want to mention that will definitely help you when learning how to make small talk is an eBook called How To Make Small Talk. This book will teach you the basics and some advanced tricks to make you better at socializing with people. This cheap and easy to read book will definitely teach you all you need to know when learning how to make conversation with people you want to make friends with, date, or just get to know. Definitely check this out if you are interested.
Always be positive when trying to talk to someone. If you are positive people will tend to listen and be more interested in what you are saying. Most people don’t want to listen to your complain about your cat, or what your wife did on Tuesday. People already seem to have enough bad on their plates, and they won’t want to hear anything negative. Be more positive, and you will increase other people’s happiness.
Talk about things you see in your environment. If you are getting a ride with someone to work, or school, and you feel like you have nothing to talk about, try starting a conversation about what you see around you. “Oh, did you see the new supermarket they are building?” or “Wow! I can’t believe it snowed today, in the middle of April. Yesterday it was so warm, and today is just blah.” are some examples of environmental small talk.
You can always start a conversation off with a compliment. This will make both you and the person you are talking to feel good. “Hey, I like your shoes. Where did you get them?” Now, the person you are talking to says the place they got their shoes, and soon enough you will be chatting about other things. Remember to be honest because sometimes people can tell and that can really kill the mood.
When talking with people ask questions and actually listen to people’s answers. They feel more welcome and feel like you are trying to get to know them, which could help with making friends, or scoring a date with someone. There is such thing as too many questions though, so be sure to know when enough is enough. People may get annoyed when being pelted with questions. Don’t just ask the questions; make sure you listen to them too. Respond to their answers. One question could be almost 10 minutes of talk easily.
Try not to stand too close to someone when making small talk because they may get uncomfortable. On the other hand, try not to stand so far away either, because they may think you are afraid to talk to them. An arm’s length away is the perfect distance when talking to someone. When both parties feel comfortable with each other, small talk becomes much easier.
It’s alright to laugh at yourself, but try not to burst out laughing. People like funny people. I know I have more fun with people that make me laugh than people who don’t, but I also like people who don’t try so hard to be funny. Trying too hard to be funny may make you look desperate, and that may not be a good thing.
